English language requirements
Do I have to sit an English proficiency test ?
A University of Melbourne degree program requires a high level of English proficiency in its coursework. Consequently all University of Melbourne applicants must demonstrate such proficiency via one of the internationally-recognised standardised English tests designed to measure your capability to handle postgraduate level English. Tests that measure English proficiency for other purposes such as everyday business communications are not accepted, as they do not assess the skills needed in the classroom.
The following tests are now accepted for our program as evidence of your capability in English:
1. A good IELTS score, with a minimum requirement of 6.5 and no band below 6;
2. A good TOEFL score, with a minimum requirement of 253 on the computer based test (CBT), 101 on the Internet based test (iBT) or 580 on the paper based test (PBT);
3. A good GMAT score;
4. A TEM-8 certificate;
5. A CET-6 certificate.
You are exempt from English language testing if any one of the following is true for you:
1. Your first (native) language is English;
2. Your undergraduate degree or other masters degree was taught totally in English;
3. You are an Australian citizen; or
4. You are an Australian permanent resident.
For all applicants, a personal interview is required as well.
