The University of Melbourne is Australia’s leading university, acknowledged with the award of the 2001-2002 Good University Guide University of the Year, and it ranks among the top 25 universities in the world.
Established in 1854,The University of Melbourne guided the development of the professions, scientific learning and cultural life in the young colony [now state] of Victoria. Early on, it established a reputation for academic excellence. Its graduates and former students have achieved distinction in many fields, including the offices of Governor General, State Governor and Prime Minister. Many graduates have gained fame in the arts and sciences, the professions and politics, including the awards of the Nobel Prize and admission to the Order of Merit.
